Description.
Each of the world's currencies has been assigned a symbol: a unique character that is usually reserved specifically for this purpose. The use of these symbols greatly simplifies the writing of prices: it is faster to write $30
than 30 US dollars
.
The currency symbol can either precede the number, without a space, as is the case for the dollar ($250
), or follow it, as in the case of the euro ( 250 €
). More rarely, the symbol is placed between the integer and the decimal part: 24€50
or 24€50
.
Note: Each currency also has a three-letter abbreviation. These abbreviations are standardised (ISO 4217 standard).
Examples: the dollar is abbreviated as USD
, the euro as EUR
, the pound sterling as GBP
, etc.
See also the page ISO 4217 on Wikipedia.
The euro symbol was created in 1995, specifically for this new currency (the symbol did not exist before). Its glyph is reminiscent of the Greek letter Epsilon (ε
) and also suggests the initial of the words Europe and Euro.
Here is a description of the euro glyph, to show the precision with which the character shapes are defined.
