Description.
Making a ligature consists of replacing two successive characters with a single character. In english, the best-known
example is & (ligature of e and t),
Ligatures such as æ or œ have assumed an orthographic value (not using them is a mistake),
but other ligatures have essentially an aesthetic purpose.
This is the case, for example, of fi which, by replacing the f and i with a single
character, avoids the collision between the i point and the f loop.
Commonly used (or even systematically) by traditional typographers, ligatures have gradually slipped into oblivion with
the arrival of computer and word processing software.
But more recently, especially since Unicode, the ligatures are starting to come back on the printed texts or on the screens.
Most fonts have common ligatures, and specialized fonts offer more fancy or purely aesthetic ligatures such as the ligature
of f and t (ſt), or s and t (st).
